Getting to the improved sections of D&H Rail-Trail
From points south of Scranton:
Interstate 81N, Exit 187 (Route 84/380/6) to US Route 6 Carbondale (Lackawanna Valley Industrial Highway). Take the LVIH to Exit 7 (a left) to Business Route 6, Carbondale. Go downhill about 2 miles to Route 171. Take right on SR 171. Follow SR 171 to Simpson, Forest City, Union Dale or Herrick Center Trailhead.
Simpson D&H Trailhead – Turn left onto Morse Ave, cross bridge and trail; parking on left. Simpson O&W Trailhead – Continue past Morse Ave to next intersection (before bridge), turn right on Reservoir St., then immediate left on Homestead Street (see army tank). Park along left side of Homestead Street. The O&W parallels the D&H, but on east side of Lackawanna River.
Forest City Trailhead – Lat 41° 38’44.99″N, Long 75°27’46.11″W Continue north on SR 171 through Simpson to Forest City. Turn right on to SR 247, just past Kost Tire (before Turkey Hill). Go about 0.2 mile to first right turn into Forest City Industrial Park. Trailhead ahead on right.
Union Dale Trailhead – Lat 41°42’49.00″N, Long 75°29’32.05″W Continue north on SR 171 through Forest City to Union Dale, past Stillwater Dam. Turn left to Union Dale, go to “T”, and turn left. See Cables Store with green & white awning ahead. Park behind Cable Store.
Rail-Trail Office is on the right in the Cables building, 948 North Main Street, Union Dale.
From points north of Scranton:
Interstate I-81 S, to Business Route 6, Exit 191A (Viewmont Mall). Follow Route 6 north into Carbondale. Turn left onto SR 171 into Simpson. See directions above.
From points north of PA:
Union Dale Trailhead — Take I-81 S entering Pennsylvania, take Exit 211 Lenox. Turn left onto SR 92 North, follow signs to Elk Mountain. Go 2.8 miles, turn right on SR 2067 (go 2.9 miles), turn left on SR 374 (go 4.6 miles, passing Elk Mt). Turn right at “T” on SR 2027/ Lyons Street (go 1.0 mile), turn left on SR 2044/Stark Road (go 1.6 miles). Turn right on SR 2042/Lewis Lake Road (go 1.6 miles). Look for green & white awning/Cable’s Store. The Union Dale Trail head is just past the store, with parking behind.
Herrick Trailhead — Take I-81 S entering Pennsylvania, take Exit 211 Lenox. Turn left onto SR 92 North, follow signs to Elk Mountain. Go 2.8 miles, turn right on SR 2067 (go 2.9 miles), turn left on SR 374 (go 4.6 miles, passing Elk Mt). Turn left at “T” following SR 374. Go uphill to next intersection; turn right, still on SR 374. Go about 3 miles, past Candlelight Inn, past Fiddle Lake Rd. Just past Quigley Rd on right, continue downhill to trail crossing, turn right on to trail/trailhead entrance.
To unimproved northern sections of D&H and Starrucca Viaduct from I-81 and Binghamton area:
Take Great Bend/Hallstead exit 230 to SR 171 towards Susquehanna and Lanesboro. Follow SR 171 (right) as it crosses the Susquehanna River. Turn left and follow Main Street to Lanesboro. At “Y” in road, turn left over bridge. Go 1 block, turn right on Depot Street to Luciana Park, for parking and access to the trail and Starrucca Viaduct. Other sections of the trail (Brandt, Stevens Point, Starrucca, and Thompson) can be accessed by turning right at “Y” and following SR 1009 (Viaduct Street turns into Starrucca Creek Rd).
Directions to the Endless Mountains Trail:
The EMT is located in Susquehanna County between Alford and Montrose. It parallels SR 11 then turns westward paralleling SR 706 into Montrose. The best access point is next to the Pump n’ Pantry on Grow Avenue, Montrose. The trail is along the golf course, crosses Old County Rd, McCollum Rd, then SR 167 at Tiffany Corners. Sections of trail are blocked in the Heart Lake area. The best place to access the lower trail is off Rose Rd, where the trail crosses. Park along the side of the trail.
